West Virginia University, commonly referred to as simply WVU, is a public research university in Morgantown, which is the county seat of Monongalia County, located in the US state of West Virginia, situated along the banks of Monongahela River. Morgantown is the 3rd largest city in North – Central West Virginia, and it is best known for the fact that it is home of West Virginia University and for its one-of-a-kind Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit system.
WVU traces its roots back in 1867, when Agricultural College of West Virginia was founded by the West Virginia Legislature, under the terms of the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act, being officially renamed West Virginia University, by lawmakers, on December 4, 1868. The University offers an Honor College, and it is divided into 15 degree - granting colleges and schools that include the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism, the College of Law, Eberly College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business & Economics and WVU Institute of Technology.
Besides the 15 colleges and schools, WVU also offers a nationally recognized forensic program, which was created through a partnership with FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), being accredited by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. There are 17 fraternities and 8 sororities at the university, approximately 15% of WVU’s students being involved in Greek life. West Virginia University was the 1st in the world to establish a bachelor - of - science degree in Biometric Systems, becoming the national academic leader for the FBI’s biometric research, on February 6, 2008.
The athletic teams from WVU are known as the West Virginia Mountaineers, who compete in NCAA’s Division I Big East Conference, in 17 college sports, winning several national championships, including 14 NCAA Rifle Championships as of 2009. Over the years, WVU has produced numerous notable athletes such as Stan `The Man` Boskovich, wrestlers Nate Carr and Georgann Wells, the 1st female player to register a dunk in a collegiate basketball game.
